AI voice interviews vs surveys vs human interviews: which research method when?

By Max Mozgovoy, Founder & CEO

Short answer: use surveys to measure, human interviews to explore sensitive topics in depth, and AI voice interviews to understand the “why” behind customer behaviour at scale. The three methods are not rivals; each answers a different question, and the best research programmes combine them.

Online surveys: great for measuring, weak at explaining

Surveys are cheap, fast to send and easy to analyse when the answers are numbers. They are the right tool for tracking satisfaction, sizing a market or checking how many customers want a feature.

Their limits show up as soon as you need reasons. A fixed form cannot ask a follow-up question, open text fields get short or skipped, and nothing of the tone survives. Surveys capture what customers say, not what they feel.

Human interviews: deep, but slow and hard to scale

A skilled interviewer builds rapport, notices hesitation and keeps asking “why” until the real story comes out. That depth is why qualitative interviews remain the gold standard for discovery.

The cost is time. Every conversation needs scheduling, a moderator, transcription and manual analysis, so most studies stop at a handful of people, and results take weeks. Different moderators also ask in different ways, which makes interviews hard to compare.

AI voice interviews: interview depth at survey scale

An AI customer interview keeps the conversation and removes the bottleneck. An AI voice agent holds a natural, goal-based conversation with each respondent, by web call or phone, and follows up on what they say. Thousands of interviews can run at once, each one handled the same way.

Because the conversation is spoken, people tell stories instead of filling in boxes. In our analysis of AI-led voice interviews, people shared considerably more by voice than in written surveys, including blockers and emotions that never appear in a form.

The analysis is automatic too: transcripts, recordings and sentiment for each interview, then customer personas and journey maps across all of them.

When each method is the right choice

Choose a survey when…

  • you need a number to track over time (NPS, CSAT, feature demand);
  • the answer options are already known;
  • you need a statistically sized sample of a simple question.

Choose a human interview when…

  • the topic is highly sensitive or personal;
  • you are co-creating with a few key customers or partners;
  • the relationship itself is part of the goal, as in strategic B2B accounts.

Choose an AI voice interview when…

  • you need the reasons behind behaviour, not just the behaviour;
  • you want to hear from hundreds or thousands of customers, not ten;
  • you need results in days, across several languages;
  • you want consistent interviews you can compare and segment.

The combined approach

The strongest programmes layer the methods. A short survey measures and flags where something is off. AI voice interviews explain why, across every segment. Human interviews go deeper still on the few questions that need a person in the room. Read more about building that in our guide to the voice of the customer.

Frequently asked questions

Are AI interviews better than surveys?

They answer a different question. Surveys are best for measuring how many people think something and tracking it over time. AI voice interviews are best for understanding why, at a scale surveys reach. Many teams use a short survey to measure and AI interviews to explain.

Can AI interviews replace human interviews?

For most discovery, feedback and journey research, AI interviews cover the same ground with far more people. Human interviews still win for highly sensitive topics, complex B2B negotiations, co-creation workshops and studies where rapport over several sessions matters.

Why do people say more in a voice interview than in a survey?

Talking is easier than typing, a conversation invites stories rather than short answers, and follow-up questions draw out details. Our own analysis of AI-led interviews found that people share considerably more by voice than in written surveys.

What is a good survey alternative for customer feedback?

If your surveys give you scores but not reasons, AI voice interviews are the natural alternative or complement: customers answer open questions out loud, the AI asks follow-ups, and the analysis is automatic.

How much do AI voice interviews cost compared with human interviews?

With VoxDiscover, plans start at $99/month for 10 interviews, up to $499/month for 50, including transcripts, sentiment analysis and personas. Human interviews add moderator, scheduling, transcription and analysis time for every single conversation.
